In the 1950s a few courageous people dedicated their lives to sharing their stories about alcoholism/addiction and recovery. This one, from that era, is rather unique.

Gert got sober in the “Oxford Group” which was the Ten Step “Christian” based recovery program, started in the Episcopal Church in the 1930s. Like virtually all from the Oxford Group, she went on to become part of the fabric of Alcoholics Anonymous.

This particular “talk” was given at a Baptist Bible College, and is of particular value because it tells about recovery in a very “Christian” context, from someone who was an Atheist until her own very personal “conversion experience.”

It is also helpful to persons who have been “religiously abused” (which is a significant portion of the American public thanks to Evangelical “Bible Centered Christianity.” In so many words, Gert explains that sort of “Christianity” may not be “Christian” at all, and she makes a powerful argument that the only kind of “religion” that is important is one that is honest and dwells in one’s heart.

Using her infectious and dry sense of humor, this “one little old woman” tell a very good story that is as entertaining as it is informative.

This is an audio presentation to which photos have been added that have no direct relationship to the story, but are included for “interest.”
