Host: What are the ways that a teen’s personal behavior indicates alcohol abuse? Judith Welles Cousins: A teenager’s behavior changes in a number of ways when they are using alcohol or other drugs and some of which I have touched on already. Teens will become — often they will become more disrespectful, will become less concerned about what adults in particular think, become more oppositional, less cooperative, become more secretive, will often resort to lieing, sometimes stealing as well and usually, when that happens in a family there is a lot of angst, a lot worry and lot of anxiety that occurs. So you will also see the teenager acting in ways that indicate that they feel guilty and for instance, they might say to their parents, “You are always picking on me, you are always telling me, you don’t trust me, you never let me do what I want to do.
