Around five point nine percent of all the deaths in the world can be blamed on alcohol, which amounts to three point three million people every year.
World Health Organization officials say that alcohol consumption is on the rise in newly developed countries like China and India, and there needs to be global focus on the health risks associated with drinking more alcohol.
Doctor Oleg Chestnov, the World Health Organization’s Assistant Director-General for Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health, is quoted as saying: “More needs to be done to protect populations from the negative health consequences of alcohol consumption. The report clearly shows that there is no room for complacency when it comes to reducing the harmful use of alcohol.”
Some measures taken by various governments to reduce access to alcohol include increasing taxes to make it more expensive, regulating the advertising of products that contain alcohol, and limiting the minimum legal age that people can drink.
