Mixing drinking and boating is a very serious problem. Over many years, groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have fought against drinking and driving but we cannot say the same for drinking and boating.
Over 40% of boating accidents are alcohol related.Whether you are a passenger on the boat or the driver on the boat, alcohol consumption can result in loss of your boating licence, as well as your driver’s licence. There is also a possibility of a jail sentence. There is no tolerance for open alcohol on a boat. Boats also do not have the same safety precautions or features that automobiles have such as airbags. Accidents that occur while boating are most often severe or fatal.
