Close Alcoholism can have a deadly affect, not only on those who abuse alcohol but also on their families and friends. Alcohol abuse can be devastating for spouses, parents, children, and friends, in how they perceive themselves, how they related to their significant others in their life, even their work and their ability to succeed on a business level, can all be damaged. So the mantra that alcoholics use to defend themselves, “It doesn’t hurt anybody but me,” is actually completely inaccurate. Rather than seeing the damage they inflict as yet another source of guilt, people who abuse alcohol can use this as an impetus to change.
