Barry is 32 and lives out-of-state; he deliberately researched a distant treatment center. He says he abused drugs and alcohol for 16 years and knew he was going the wrong way. He was impressed that Sovereign offered treatment for dual diagnosis and that treatment was evidence based. He liked the daily structure and said he learned much from the groups and therapists. He focused on how he would use what he learned to improve his future.
Barry particularly enjoyed the gym and the food, saying he is now off fast food for good. He credited cognitive behavioral therapy with helping him think more positively and to understand how events and genetics shaped his former behavior, saying that he now thinks differently.
The staff was described as helpful and people who got things done. Barry said when he needed something, he learned how to ask in an assertive manner without being aggressive. He stated “At my last treatment center I didn’t care, I care now. I want to make changes and have a new life; I have gotten the tools to rebuild my life. I tell myself, reimagine, reinvent and build. I’ve learned a lot.” What would he tell others? “I was using and drinking for years, but I found guidance and you must focus on the positive.”
