Alex had tried treatment over a dozen times, but it was at Mountainside Treatment Center that he found recovery. Now 2 years sober, he shares the biggest obstacles he faced in his journey.

I’m Alex. I live in New Hampshire now. I’m from Connecticut, born and raised. I am just over two years sober now — sorry, I had to kind of take that in. Mountainside was my last stop. Previously, I had been to over a dozen treatment centers. Mountainside was an amazing experience, and I’m not just saying that. After being in more than a dozen treatment centers, you kind of learn the ins and outs of how to “beat the system,” so to speak. Mountainside was my first real experience in recovery. I say recovery because I believed I’m a recovered alcoholic. I got sober through the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.
I’m two years sober. The biggest thing that I’ve overcome in sobriety — there is more than one thing that I could share — was overcoming myself. Not only getting out of my way own way, but escaping the selfishness. Being so self-absorbed in active addiction brought me to places that I never thought possible. It wasn’t just the drugs. It was the selfishness, the self-centeredness, everything they talk about in Alcoholics Anonymous, I went through and then some in active addiction.
Being on the other side of that looks like helping other people recover. It looks like living a different way of life, not just to stay sober but to live a better life. I don’t know how else to put it. I don’t just focus all my energy on people in recovery. I choose to help those in need, period. I’ll offer a helping hand to anyone that needs it because I’m fortunate enough today to be able to take care of myself, to support myself, and my new fiancé. We’re currently house hunting…Life is beautiful. It’s beautiful. I actually go to a local rehab here in Manchester, New Hampshire once a month and share my experience, strength, and hope with kids there in the hopes that they find this path that I found or anything similar to it. Thank you.
