http://canadianhealthrecoverycentre.ca/ CHRC Primary Counselor Sheena Eady talks about Alcohol and Drug Addiction Neuroplasticity. Addiction involves a variety of neural pathways that influence and dictate our thoughts, behaviours and emotions. Once these pathways are established, it takes little to no effort to recall them and engage them. Often times, our patterns of thought, behaviour and emotion become automatic. Neural pathways cannot be eliminated from the brain through the process of neuroplasticity; however, new neural pathways can be formed and existing pathways can be reorganized. This process is referred to as neuroplasticity. The more we repeat a particular pattern, the better we become at it, to the point where we can engage in a behaviour without having to think much about it. Thoughts, behaviours and emotions can be changed and overcome with practice and technique.
