An investigation has been launched in Erie, Pennsylvania after a 1-year-old baby was found to have an extremely high alcohol content.
The female child was taken to Saint Vincent Hospital located in Pittsburgh. When medical staff realized the baby’s blood alcohol level was 0.289 percent, she was flown to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.
In the state, adult drivers are deemed legally intoxicated if their levels reach 0.08 percent, so that means the infant’s content was three and a half times the legal limit.
The police were contacted along with the Erie County Office of Children and Youth. Erie Police Chief Randy Bowers said investigators are looking into where the child was prior to being transported to the medical facility.
The girl’s mother and friend reportedly brought her to the hospital. They’ve since been interviewed by police.
The child is said to be recovering well and has been placed into foster care while the investigation continues.
According to the mother, she retuned home from working the night shift to discover her daughter, who had been with an unidentified caregiver, had fell and suffered a cut, leading her to take the infant to the hospital. No charges have yet been filed.
