Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is recognized as a medical and mental health condition rather than a moral failing. Previously referred to as “alcoholism,” the term was replaced in 1994 by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) with “alcohol abuse” and “alcohol dependence.” In 2013, the terminology was further refined to “alcohol use disorder,” which is categorized under substance use disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, text revision (DSM-5-TR). The APA has moved away from using the terms “alcohol abuse” and “alcoholism” in clinical settings due to their imprecision and the stigma they perpetuate regarding the disorder.
