“Brian’s Story” is a profoundly moving documentary that follows Brian Davis – a Cambridge educated journalist who, after walking out of a successful career, finds himself on the streets of London coping with alcoholism, manic depression and homelessness.
2:219 THEY WILL ASK thee about intoxicants and games of chance. Say: “In both there is great evil as well as some benefit for man; but the evil which they cause is greater than the benefit which they bring.”
5:90 O YOU who have attained to faith! Intoxicants, and games of chance, and idolatrous practices, and the divining of the future are but a loathsome evil of Satan’s doing: shun it, then, so that you might attain to a happy state! (91) By means of intoxicants and games of chance Satan seeks only to sow enmity and hatred among you, and to turn you away from the remembrance of God and from prayer. Will you not, then, desist?
Denoting every substance the use of which obscures the intellect, i.e., intoxicates. Hence, the prohibition of intoxicants laid down in this verse comprises not merely alcoholic drinks, but also drugs which have a similar effect. The only exception from this total prohibition arises in cases of “dire necessity”: that is to say, in cases where illness or a bodily accident makes the administration of intoxicating drugs or of alcohol imperative and unavoidable.
After living with depression for much of my own life and having witnessed first-hand the destructive effects of alcohol abuse within the family – I can honestly say that the only real solution to all of these problems is faith. To turn away from all self-destructive inner tendencies and turn sincerely to God for help.
4:27 And God wants to turn unto you in His mercy, whereas those who follow [only] their own lusts want you to drift far away from the right path.
4:28 God wants to lighten your burdens: for man has been created weak.
We all need something, something which is not found in drink, drugs, money, possessions or even in others – something that can only be found in the remembrance of God. Only faith offers true happiness, peace of mind and the promise of eternal salvation.
God it the rock in the desert of life,
He is the mountain.
God is the guide that leads back to the path,
He is the fountain.
God is the star on the moonless night,
in the deepest depths of darkness,
God is the light!
So when you wake up,
get up,
and praise Him!
We are all ultimately responsible for our own spiritual fate. We have each been given free-will and the ability to choose for ourselves. One path leads into darkness, hell and ultimate self-destruction. The other path leads out of the darkness and into the light of salvation and eternal life. None of us are perfect, “man has been created weak” and will always fall short of the religious ideal. What is important is to accept God into our lives and to climb out of the darkness towards Him. Believe in, and strive for eternal salvation – as it ought to be believed in and striven for. We may choose to ignore it, but death is very real, it overshadows everything and it comes to us all sooner or later.
57:20 KNOW [O men] that the life of this world is but a play and a passing delight, and a beautiful show, and [the cause of] your boastful vying with one another, and [of your] greed for more and more riches and children.
Its parable is that of [life-giving] rain: the herbage which it causes to grow delights the tillers of the soil; but then it withers, and thou canst see it turn yellow; and in the end it crumbles into
dust.
But [the abiding truth of man’s condition will become fully apparent] in the life to come: [either]
suffering severe, or God’s forgiveness and His goodly acceptance: for the life of this world is
nothing but an enjoyment of self-delusion.
