If you put twenty Americans in a room, chances are at least one of them is a heavy drinker.
That’s according to figures released Tuesday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC defines ‘heavy drinking’ as consuming more than 14 alcoholic drinks per week for men or more than seven drinks per week for women.
UPI reports just over 5% of American adults aged 18 and over admitted to engaging in ‘heavy drinking.’
However, the CDC data shows 6.4% of white adults drink heavily, as opposed to black adults at 2.9.%, and Hispanic adults at 2.6%.
There was no discernible gender difference. Men and women were equally likely to be heavy drinkers.
In July, the CDC reported that more than 93,000 Americans die from alcohol-related causes annually.
