What is it?
Alcohol poisoning is a serious, deadly consequence of drinking large amounts of ethanol alcohol within a short period of time, causing your blood alcohol level to reach a point so high that it’s considered poisonous, or toxic. Alcohol poisoning can be life-threatening and is therefore considered an urgent medical emergency.

Where is it located?
Alcohol poisoning occurs everywhere throughout the world because of its prevalence in all cultures and societies. These days, college students suffer from alcohol poisoning most often. Some countries have higher alcohol addiction rates than others, the top three countries being Moldova (18.22%), the Czech Republic (16.45%), and Hungary (16.27%) with the percentage of their populations addicted to alcohol listed here. PSA (Public Service Announcement) is shown in many societies these days to teach people how to deal with victims suffering from alcohol poisoning.

How will it kill you?
The primary cause of alcohol poisoning is binge drinking during alcohol intoxication, or drinking copious amounts of alcohol within a short period of time. This is the most common story of when it happens. The amount required for the dose to be considered poisonous depends on your size (weight & height), amount of food ingested, genetics, tolerance levels, and other factors. Symptoms begin with a drop in the person’s body temperature followed by pale skin, passing out while being unresponsive, irregular breathing patterns, and vomiting. The victim will then go into a coma and can die from several different ways, including heart attack, choking on their own vomit, hypothermia, severe dehydration, and a drop in blood glucose levels.

How to treat alcohol poisoning:
Always be on the lookout for signs of alcohol poisoning. If you believe someone you know is suffering from alcohol poisoning, call an ambulance. In the meantime, keep them awake by making sure they’re in a sitting position and pouring them water. If they’re unconscious, put them in the recovery position while continually checking if they’re breathing. Once professional medical help arrives, they’ll be given an intravenous drip to control their hydration, blood glucose, and vitamin levels while at the same time being monitored until their alcohol levels drop. They may also have a tube inserted into their windpipe to assist with breathing, as well as a urinary catheter if they’re incontinent. Severe cases will require a stomach pump (gastric lavage) in order to flush the alcohol toxins out of the victim’s system.

Now what do you think is worse and why? Suffering from radiation poisoning? Or being poisoned by mustard gas?
