Dr. Phil [April 20, 2015]: – I Believe My Parents are Enabling My Drug-Using, Model Brother
I Believe My Parents are Enabling My Freeloading, Drug-Using, Model Brother & It Needs to Stop Today!
April 20, 2015

Anthony says his fitness model brother, Jamie, has struggled for years with drugs and alcohol — all the while being financially supported by his parents. Jamie says he is sober now and has things under control. Emotions run high when the family comes face to face on Dr. Phil’s stage. What causes Jamie to storm offstage?

Addiction Struggles

Jamie, 29, says he has struggled with cocaine and alcohol abuse since his early 20s, when he worked as a model. Today, he says he has been drug-free for three months and hasn’t had a drink in two weeks. I don’t want to go down the wrong path and use drugs ever again, he says.

Steve and Joey, Jamie’s parents, say they are still worried about their son, who they say hasn’t always been forthcoming about his drug use. Talking to Jamie about it, it’s like the 300-pound elephant in the room, Steve says. It’s a subject you just didn’t bring up. It’s a subject you thought would hopefully go away, but it never did.”

Jamie’s mom says, I ask Jamie about his drinking and drug use when I have an opportunity and if I feel I need to ask him. Over the last year, he’s not around as much for me to know, and I have to say he sounds better.

Jamie’s brother, Anthony, says he doesn’t buy that Jamie is OK — and he believes his parents are a big part of the problem, because they continue to support Jamie financially, paying for his rent, car, gas and even giving him spending money. Right now, I’m watching my little brother essentially killing himself, and my parents always end up rewarding him, he says.

Janet, Anthony’s wife, agrees. I think Jamie has been extremely fortunate in life, she says. I want his parents to learn how to help Jamie in the right ways.
