According to a study from the University of Illinois in Chicago, drinking a moderate amount of alcohol might actually make
people better at coming up with creative solutions to problems.
Researchers gave study subjects puzzles to solve along with a bagel to eat and a cranberry vodka cocktail to drink.
When the subjects’ blood alcohol levels were around .075, they worked on Remote Associate Test puzzles, and the results showed that after drinking, the subjects finished the puzzles faster, and were better at solving the ones that required creative thinking.
First study author Andrew Jarosz, a graduate student from the University of Illinois in Chicago said: “ We’re not going to argue ‘smarter’ or ‘intelligence’ or anything like that.. In some cases, it’s beneficial. Is it beneficial in all cases? No, we’re not saying that. I obviously would not suggest you drink a vodka cranberry before taking the SAT.”
The sober study subjects got an average of 6 point 3 correct answers and the subjects who had drank vodka scored an average of 8 point 7 correct answers.
What do you think? Can drinking a little bit of alcohol help make people more creative at problem solving?
