Alcoholism is a disease and many alcoholics do not fit the stereotype of the useless drunk. The warning signs of developing alcoholism are obvious in hindsight but can go unnoticed for many years, until alcohol is dominating your life.
Alcoholism is sneaky in that for many people, it creeps up on them slowly.
Here are 10 subtle signs to watch out for that indicate that you may very well be an alcoholic:
1. Your drinking is interfering with your work, home, or family life.
2. You drink in secret, or lie about how much you’re drinking.
3. You drink to get drunk alone.
4. You find it difficult to stop drinking once you start.
5. When you drink, you drink more than you said or promised yourself you would on any given occasion.
6. You’ve tried different ways of managing your drinking (none of which work over any length of time).
7. You’ve tried to cut down on your drinking but couldn’t or found it really hard to do so.
8. You have a family history of drinking.
9. You’ve gotten on the wrong side of the law because of your drinking.
10. You think you might be an alcoholic.
If you see these signs in yourself or a loved one, call The National Drug and Alcohol Treatment Referral Routing Service toll free at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for help.
