There are three levels to address when thinking about the nature of addiction. At the macro level we must create better laws that target not just the black market arena for drug distribution, but also laws that address the white market distribution of highly addictive drugs by implementing more stringent standards. At the micro level, for those who have overcome drug addiction anonymity has to change, you must speak out. For those who are not addicted to drugs and alcohol we can begin to look at those who were and still are addicted to drugs and alcohol and those suffering form mental health as people, not moral failings. And finally, at the individual level two things can minimally happen: for those of us who are not addicted to substances or are not mentally ill, we could educate ourselves about the challenges for overcoming drug and alcohol abuse and mental health; and for the addicted person, we know you didn’t choose to become an addict, but you must choose to fight everyday to find meaning and hope for a life without drugs and alcohol.
