Each year, nearly 90,000 Americans die from alcohol-related causes. Nearly all of these people have chronic drinking problems and receive the message that they have an incurable disease which requires them to stop consuming alcohol forever. Of those who attempt to quit, however, failure rates are dismally high: more than 90 percent by some estimates.

Is “abstinence only” the only way to deal with alcohol use disorder? Is there hope for those who have serious problems with alcohol but can’t avoid it? Should public policy do more to recognize the diversity of approaches that can effectively combat AUD?

If you’re interested in the answers to these questions and others, please join C Three Foundation CEO Claudia Christian, R Street Institute President Eli Lehrer and several of the individuals profiled in the book for a talk about her new book Journeys: Inspirational Stories of Recovery from Addiction Using a Breakthrough Scientific Method.

R Street Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, public policy research organization. Our mission is to engage in policy research and outreach to promote free markets and limited, effective government.

We believe free markets work better than the alternatives. We also recognize that the legislative process calls for practical responses to current problems. To that end, our motto is “Free markets. Real solutions.”

We offer research and analysis that advance the goals of a more market-oriented society and an effective, efficient government, with the full realization that progress on the ground tends to be made one inch at a time. In other words, we look for free-market victories on the margin.
