Iowa police arrested Levi Carter after he reportedly blew an almost stunning .467 on a breath test for alcohol.

The saga began when the Iowa City resident decided to drive a woman home after consuming unknown quantities of alcohol. While allegedly speeding, Carter drove off the road and hit a sign post.

Upon getting home, the woman called the cops to report Carter’s accident and officers soon arrived at his home and found him in the basement having an animated discussion with people police could not see. Carter told the cops he had “had a couple of beers,” but police said the basement “reeked” of alcohol and Carter was barely able to stand.

Carter was unable to complete a field sobriety test but when tested on a breathalyzer, police say he blew a .467, before the machine reportedly simply began reading “HI.”

Carter’s blood-alcohol level was six times over the state’s limit, and he may end up serving time behind bars since, a local newspaper put it, he faces “serious misdemeanor charges” of driving a vehicle while intoxicated. Carter is said to have initially denied driving that evening, but later admitted he had given a woman a ride home.

Carter’s drinking could have easily been fatal. The threshold for drinking to unconsciousness for many humans is somewhere around .30. Levels reaching .45 or above can be lethal. The Daily Mail reports that blood alcohol levels between .40 and .50 have been compared to the equivalent of surgical anesthesia.
