Former Friends star Matthew Perry has opened up about his past substance abuse issues and how far he has come since his darkest days.

The 46 year old comic actor, who was recently the recipient of Pheonix House’s 2015 Phoenix Rising award, discussed his past alcohol addiction and how he now uses it to help others with a similar problem.

“Getting sober is a really hard thing to do. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my life and a lot of wonderful accolades, but the best thing about me is that if an alcoholic comes up to me and says, ‘Will you help me stop drinking?’ I will say, ‘Yes. I know how to do that.'”

Perry told The Hollywood Reporter about how being under the gaze of millions of viewers was both a blessing and a curse during his troubled times.

“When I was in big trouble, it was so public because I was on a TV show that 30 million people were watching. The fact that I am on TV makes people listen a little bit more, so I take advantage of that from time to time.”

The interview came amid rumours of a friends reunion after Jennifer Anniston, Cortney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow were recently spotted having dinner together.

Perry, however, has denied any such renuion is on the cards.
