Men have different challenges when it comes to sobriety.

Addiction is the suppressing of emotions and in many cultures it’s not socially acceptable for men to express emotions.

Drugs and alcohol are great way to numb these emotions. So naturally when it’s not safe for you to express your emotions then it’s going to be harder to get/stay sober.

I also recommend to all my male clients to get their testosterone checked. Low testosterone can lead to men feeling aggravated and annoyed. Also if men and women aren’t inspired to connect intimately then neither are getting their needs met for connection. As we know disconnection is a recipe for addictive behaviours.

Day in day out, lifestyle factors and living a healthy lifestyle will balance hormones, but not always, so if we’re feeling unbalanced, it’s good to go to your health professional, doctor or naturopath.

Obviously I’m not a man so I can’t speak to the experience personally. Just share what I’ve observed and studied. I will say that with male clients, movement and sport, meditation and time in nature are all very powerful for staying in recovery.

Men have other challenges, in many societies male suicide is a huge problem. For the same reason addiction is, in part. It’s not acceptable for men to speak to their emotions especially their personal pain. Drugs and alcohol can be a great solution for numbing emotions. Until they are not. Until the solution becomes bigger than the problem and addiction kicks in.

I would encourage any man suffering to find men they can speak to that won’t judge them. Professionals or non-professionals, program or non-program. If you are in any danger of self harm please do call a suicide hotline.

The crazy thing about addiction, is that it can be so incredibly dark, but on the only side, months, sometimes even weeks later, life can be bright and full of hope again.
