Colucci: A friend of mine posted something about this on Twitter and it’s something I would not even thought about is people who are in recovery from say alcohol or drug abuse or something to that effect. Right now, this is a lot tougher for them, not just because of what’s going on but those who went to like AA meetings or NA meetings or support groups may not be able to physically go to those meetings because of everything going on. So do you have any thoughts for them and any thoughts on how allies can support them.
Pere: Yeah, you’re right. My understanding is most AA meetings are shut down right now as they need to be – that’s a collection of multiple people and we just can’t do that right now. There are online or virtual AA meetings. You can Google that and see what’s there. That should be relatively easy to find that should be searchable on the internet. So see what’s happening online and if they’re not the ones that are already there, I’m sure that they, I know actually that they are in the works, that people are moving more to this format given what’s going on in the world right now. So there should be more options soon for online meetings.
Connect more with your sponsor, reach out to them by phone or, or even better by video chat. You can also meet in person if you keep your distance right, but talk to or lean on your sponsor more than you might have typically. Adhere to your sobriety plan, maybe check back in with what your sobriety plan is and make sure that you are following steps that you’ve already established that are helpful to you that may not include the, the in-person AA meetings or NA meetings; lean on social supports by phone or virtually or in person from a distance. Lean on people that you know are helpful to you. Be willing to ask for help. And you asked him about the allies. So we can, we can be more proactive in checking in with people we know that are struggling with addiction, not waiting for them to reach out to us, but checking in with them now and seeing how they’re doing and, and spending time with them virtually on the phone, online, in person from a distance, right. But being more assertive with them, proactive with them and ask them how you can help, right. The person knows best what they need, we don’t need to guess. We can ask them “how can I better support you given this time?”
