Mindfulness and the practices related to it have a positiv effect on people’s psychological well-being. That has been proven by several scietific studies. Did you know though, that it can also help you break the cycle of addiction and achieve long-term recovery?

Mindfulness coach Paul Garrigan, an alcoholic in recovery himself, speaks about his personal experience with mindfulness, explains the 4-step program used at Hope Rehab and why it actually works.

Why does an addiction treatment center like Hope Rehab offer a mindfulness program? Once people stop using drugs and alcohol they are suddenly dealing with a lot of difficult emotions and negative thinking patterns. For some addicts obsessive thoughts and negative feelings were the reason why they picked up substances in the first place. Mindfulness practices provide us with the ability to see our thoughts in a different, more objective way. That allows us to develop a different relationship towards our thoughts and feelings.

At Hope Rehab, Paul Garrigan runs a 4-step mindfulness program to help clients who recently quit drugs and alcohol to build a solid foundation for their addiction recovery.

1.) It’s all about grounding ourselves. This means becoming aware of the here and now, the present moment, by focusing on the 5 senses. Our bodies often do that naturally when we’re in great distress (e.g. by walking/pacing up and down/rocking back and forth to soothe ourselves). The goal is to become focused on reality rather than on the stories in our head. It’s the first step of the mindfulness program and it’ll help you to break the cycle of addiction.

2.) In the second stage of the mindfulness program we learn to open up and develop an accepting attitude. There just are things that we cannot change (e.g. the past).

3.) The third step of the mindfulness program is about developing concentration which allows us to see things more clearly – including your addiction problems.

4.) This all leads up to the fourth step of the mindfulness program: Insight. This simply means becoming aware of the tricks our minds play on us on a daily basis and not being fooled by them any longer.

Even if it’s just the first step of the mindfulness program, the grounding, that clients embrace, it can make a huge difference in their recovery – especially when it comes to cravings.
