Hong Kong people are polite, and the city’s streets are kept spotless even at normal times. Shopping malls gleam, escalator handrails and lift buttons in office blocks are disinfected several times a day – a hangover from the bout of SARS that shook the city in 2003. Spitting, commonplace in mainland China, is a big no-no here. Litter, and you may well be fined 5,000 Hong Kong dollars.
