“When emotional responses are subject to irrelevant change on a moment to moment basis, then the patients affective state is described as being irritable, or labile. A labile affective state is frequently seen in people who have organic brain syndrome. Notice the affective changes in this man in a period of just two minutes. He initially appears aggressive, but shortly thereafter claims his feelings are under good control. A few seconds later, if we observe him he appears to be on the edge of tears.”
