After nearly losing her life, Shanna Whan decided to do something radical and unheard of when she spoke very publicly about her hard-fought recovery from alcoholism after a lifetime of unaddressed mental health issues.

She’s now educating and challenging rural and regional Australia on the truth of what she calls our ‘casual alcoholism’ epidemic. Her aim is to help educate her rural working peers, parents and high-functioning professionals on how to prevent the fallout associated with the love for excessive booze in Australian culture, to encourage better health and better relationships with alcohol, and to give practical help -and hope – to those who need it most, but who are most unlikely to be able to access it.
Shanna is an Agri Futures NSW/ACT 2018 Rural Woman of the year Finalist and a recovered alcoholic. This brave lady has chosen to take her survival story to the public speaking and blogging platform through her social media platform ‘’Sober in the Country’’ and as a result, has been affecting real change in what she calls the ‘casual alcoholism culture’ of rural Australia.
Shanna’s bringing unprecedented insight and discussion to an area that has previously been a no-go zone. She’s also challenging how we deal with addiction in rural areas. Shanna’s goal is to secure funding and take the platform national, to reach our most isolated and vulnerable community and farming members. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
