Government surveys show that marijuana use among adults has doubled in the US over the last decade.
Citing a cultural shift with permissive views about the drug, the researchers found an increasing number of those that thought it should be legalized.
The results came from two periods between 2001-to-2002 and 2012-to-2013.
Almost 80,000 adults aged 18 and older participated in the study.
Though average use increased among all the ages, the greatest increased occurred between 18 and 29.
Sponsored by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the study found a slight decline in dependency or abuse.
