USMLE Step 1 – Review

How does alcohol abuse leads to pancreatitis.

1. Alcoholism leads to : increase pancreatic juice secretion with high protein concentration and low fluid content. This leads to pancreatic secretion —which leads to precipitation of and plugs formation and obstruct lumen of pancreatic ductules.

2. Alcohol can also cause spasm of sphincter of Oddi and direct toxic effect of acinar cells.

Both of the effects can cause pancreatitis in patients with alcohol abuse.
