Tetrahydroisoquinoline (THIQ) is an opioid-like compound found in excess in the brains of alcoholics and heroin users. A study published in 1970 suggested that as far as alcoholics were concerned, an excess of THIQ caused it whereas there was none in a moderate drinker. I made a small error in saying that morphine wasn’t found in an autopsy of a heroin user/addict. Morphine would be found as through its metabolic process Heroin is converted to Morphine in the brain. This theory is no longer valid. People with alcohol use disorder or categorically different than people without the disease. The withdrawal syndromes are also different. The earlier study thought that THIQ wasn’t detected in people without alcohol use disorder. THIQ is present in heroin users as well. Studies with rats, monkeys/chimps showed it possible to induce dependence by injecting small amounts of THIQ into the animal’s brain. Also, erroneously I said that THIQ can be found in non-drinkers. It’s heavy drinkers and not not light drinkers that have amounts of THIQ in their brains. Alcoholic drinkers have it located in their cerebellum.
