CRYSTAL CITY, TEXAS — Residents of a rural Texas city were shocked last week when their tap water suddenly began running black.

Crystal City, the self-styled “Spinach Capital of the World,” is a small farming city located around 115 miles southwest San Antonio.

The water began running black on Thursday last week when city workers drained the city’s water tank for the first time in several decades, CNN reported, causing years of black sediment that had built up inside the tank to be flushed into water pipes.

The black sediment traveled through the pipes and into the homes of the city’s 7,500 residents, who were greeted with black, oil-like sludge when they turned on their faucets.

The city’s schools were closed in response and residents were angry that no warning had been issued.

In response, the city has shipped in bottled water and advised residents to boil water before use while officials await test results to determine whether it is safe to drink.
