GREENBRIER, TENNESSEE — Two Tennessee teenagers have died following the ingestion of a cocktail made from Mountain Dew and racing fuel.

Two 16-year-olds Logan Stephenson and J.D. Byram were among a group of teens believed to have been drinking the fuel-laced soda last week. Logan was found unresponsive in his home the next morning on Thursday and pronounced dead. J.D. died Tuesday morning after being hospitalized.

Following J.D.’s death, two others came forward admitting the four of them had made the lethal cocktail. The two other teens were hospitalized, treated and have since been released.

The concoction, also known as Dewshine, was made from racing fuel, which can be bought at some gas stations, and Mountain Dew. Police believe the teens were trying to get the same effects of alcohol from the racing fuel, which contains toxic methanol.

“A lot of people refer to it as ‘moonshine on steroids.’ A lot of people call it ‘Dewshine,'”Greenbrier Police Chief K.D. Smith told NBC News.

The fuel-laced Dewshine different than PepsiCo’s DEWshine. The maker of Mountain Dew also produces a non-alcoholic product called DEWshine that it advertises as a “craft, premium soft drink inspired by the brand’s roots in the backwoods of Tennessee.”

While police are still awaiting autopsy results, which will confirm the cause of deaths, they believe there was no other cause of foul play citing the drink as the most probable cause.
