A new study by UCLA researchers has found that an anti-inflammatory drug called Ibudilast, used in Japan to treat asthma, may be a promising new treatment for alcoholism. “We found in this study that Ibudilast is safe and well-tolerated,” said Lara Ray, a UCLA professor of psychology, director of the UCLA Addictions Laboratory. “This medication can be safely administered, including when people are drinking alcohol.”
During the six days they were on Ibudilast, the participants had a significant decrease in their craving for alcohol (compared with when they were given the placebo). The researchers found only mild to moderate side effects, mostly nausea and some abdominal pain.
