HARTLEPOOL, UK — Two teenaged girls are on trial at Leeds Crown Court for beating a woman to death. They were reportedly 13- and 14-years-old at the time of the crime.
Angela Wrightson of Hartlepool was an alcoholic, but neighbors told The Guardian she was well-liked, especially when sober. Wrightson, 39, reportedly had a reputation for buying alcohol for minors.
Two runaway girls, then aged 13 and 14, befriended Wrightson, who supplied them with booze, reportedly in exchange for getting some free alcohol for herself. On the evening of December 8, 2014, the teen girls arrived at Wrightson’s home just after 7:30.
What happened between then and 4 a.m. is nothing short of horrific. The girls reportedly left Wrightson’s home at 11 p.m. before returning at 2 a.m. and then finally leaving again at 4 a.m.
During that time, Wrightson suffered more than 100 injuries after being battered with sticks, a TV set, a computer printer and even a coffee table. Wrightson may have already been dead when the pair returned at 2 a.m.
Chillingly, at their ongoing trial at Leeds Crown Court, the jury was told the girls sent mocking snapchat selfies posing with Wrightson’s battered body and then, laughing and joking, called the police for a ride home.
The teenagers even took a Snapchat of themselves sitting in the back of the police van after the crime.
The girls claim Wrightson threatened them with a knife, but whether true or not, evidence points to a sustained, utterly callous beating in 12 separate locations of the woman’s home. Wrightson was found dead on her sofa, naked from the waist down.
It’s unknown what sentence the girls, unidentified for legal reasons, and now 14 and 15, could receive if found guilty. Both defendants deny murdering Wrightson. Their trial continues.
