What does it mean to be a ‘functioning alcoholic’?

So often we have a mental image of what we believe an alcoholic “looks like” to determine the signs of alcoholism. But, the stereotypes that we cling to aren’t necessarily true – the chances are that you already know someone who is living with high functioning or functional alcoholism.

Alcoholism is a disease of denial – although it can be hard for a person to recognize the signs of alcoholism if they consider themselves to be functioning. Over time, alcoholism – whether functioning or non-functioning – can lead to serious consequences, health and family issues.
