Welcome to today’s session on Alcoholic Liver Disease. In this video, we will dive deep into understanding what alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is, the mechanisms behind it, and its potential consequences. We’ll begin by exploring the metabolism of alcohol in the liver and how long-term alcohol consumption can lead to chronic complications such as cirrhosis or end-stage liver disease.
We’ll cover several key aspects of ALD, including:

1. What is Alcoholic Liver Disease?

We’ll explore the predisposing factors behind ALD. While many people consume alcohol, only a few develop liver-related complications. Why is that? Let’s find out.

2. Mechanisms of Injury
How alcohol consumption leads to liver damage. We’ll look at the processes in hepatocytes and the specific ways alcohol affects liver tissue.

3. Stages of Alcoholic Liver Disease

Steatosis (Fatty Liver): Accumulation of fat in liver cells.
Steatohepatitis: Inflammation in addition to fat accumulation.
Cirrhosis: The final, irreversible stage, leading to severe liver damage.

4. Pathological Findings in Biopsy
Learn what we observe in liver biopsies at various stages of alcoholic liver disease, from fatty liver to cirrhosis.

5. Cirrhosis in Detail
We’ll cover cirrhosis extensively, as it’s an important condition to understand. You’ll learn about its classification by etiology, morphology, and the complications that can arise from it.

6. Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
We will briefly discuss how NAFLD can mimic alcoholic liver disease but without alcohol consumption.

7. Hemochromatosis
A hereditary condition that can also lead to liver cirrhosis.

Additionally, we will analyze a case scenario of a 62-year-old male with a long history of alcohol consumption, presenting with typical symptoms such as jaundice, ascites, and splenomegaly, which suggests cirrhosis. We will walk through the clinical features, likely diagnosis, and the pathophysiology behind it.
